Street Cheer: Press Release - Street Cheer comes to Manchester

Cheerleading came to Manchester in a big way this weekend as the Velodrome played host to the UKCA (UK Cheerleading Association) National Cheerleading Championships and the UK launch of a new youth sport taking the nation by storm - Street Cheer

Over 2,000 children from across the nation were introduced to Street Cheer, an activity which sees the latest funky street dance moves, fused with traditional Cheerleading techniques to create an exciting new initiative already capturing the imagination of young people from all walks of life

The launch saw a professional team of Street Dancers from Manchester, the Sunshine Crew, put on an impressive display to the packed Velodrome audience which revealed the roots of this emerging activity. This was closely followed by a full Street Cheer demonstration by local team Rising Stars from Stockport and Coventry based Gemini G-Force

Pat Hawkins, president of the UKCA, commented: "The launch of this new national event is a major step forward in the development of Street Cheer as a sports concept. The unique blend of street dance with Cheerleading Chants and Cheers has created a sporting activity which has appeal to a broad spectrum of young people and one which has very real potential to produce some exciting UK talent."

Jane Ashworth, CEO of StreetGames, the national charity dedicated to delivering doorstep sport for young people across the UK and responsible, along with the UKCA, for delivering Street Cheer, shares Pat's enthusiasm. Jane said: "Street Cheer is a fresh and exciting sport which appeals to children from all backgrounds, particularly to those who, for whatever reason, have not had access to or interest in more traditional sporting activities format that they want. From the growing demand for Street Cheer we've witnessed with our projects over the past year, this is certainly a sport which achieves those objectives and judging by the response it received from the crowd this weekend, it certainly looks set to take the UK by storm."
